It is natural for us to fear death, for it is the most violent shock that we an endure, and the strangest change that we can experience.
And, for this reason, even a good man may be afraid of the event itself, though he has no cause to fear its consequences. Yet the thought of it does not greatly agitate his mind, and sometimes he can behold its approach with serenity.
But the thought of death is to some like the entrance of a dreadful messenger into a circle of merry companions: it causes a revulsion in their feelings, and mixes sadness with their mirth and gaiety.
